Stud Description

Established in 2008 at “Stranmillis” in the Inglewood area by the Merchant Family.

Commencing with 12 registered stud breeders, the emphasis being on breeding quality females, today the stud has the strength of over 300 registered female breeders.

Mark and staff constantly strive to breed cattle that maintain optimum balance in muscling to fat cover and growth to maturity, we observe genetic gain across the Oak Creek herd.

Recent purchases of high quality breeders from some of the best studs throughout Australia, along with our current high quality herd is testament to our desire to produce some of the best cattle available in Australia.

Embryo transfers are utilized extensively in our breeding program, primarily to derive a higher percentage of replacement heifers from elite cows. Mature cows with extensive and consistent production histories are selected as donors, with 50 plus embryo transfer calves bred annually, with 100% of the commercial herd undergoing A.I to achieve premium herd expansion.

The stud is situated on relatively light country, this we believe attributes to the cattle produced being very sound and suitable for all conditions in the future.

All stud cows are artificially inseminated to proven sires, some of the best Australia and overseas can offer. On occasion we have used new fashionable sires, however we generally find the proven sires to be more successful, this option is often more expensive, we believe the cost is far outweighed by quality return.

We use breed plan as an important tool in sire selection; this has proven very reliable particularly with the Angus breed. The high standard of bulls we use after completion of the A.I program is closely monitored and their offspring is compared against the calves by Australian & worldwide sires currently being used, our benchmark is very high at Oak Creek. Currently our bull Sired by Hoffs Limited Edition is more than holding his own.

We believe that future generation in the cattle industry needs to be nurtured so we donate heifers and bulls to junior exhibitors to parade, these animals are generally preselected by Steven Hayward, Steve also prepares and parades our small show team.

Our success in the first year of competition with limited outings has been very pleasing, with Breed Champion, Champion British Breed success.

Being a relatively new stud, there will be many challenges along the way to build a first class stud, for this reason we have purchased breeders from fellow stud breeders with very good reputations, at times we have preferred to buy older breeders that have been proven over many years to build the corner stone of our female herd.

As with all new ventures in any industry … foresight - dedication - attention to detail and passion are very important to our success, these 4 things at Oak Creek stud we strive for every day.

So please look for our Oak Creek banner at your local show.
